Some interesting information on how chiropractic may help with back pain during pregnancy:

A Chiropractor may be able to help a pregnant women enjoy the pregnancy and avoid some of the uncomfortable musculoskeletal side effects related to changes in posture and weight gain. Pregnancy pain may cause pain in the lower back, upper back, buttocks, groin and legs.

Because of the way in which spinal ligaments and muscles are attached to the pelvis, postural strain may influence the positioning of the uterus and therefore the birth canal. Ensuring that the lower back and pelvic area of the body is functioning correctly may make potential trauma related to giving birth easier for both the mother and the baby.

With the release of relaxin causing increased joint laxity and with the anterior enlargement of the uterus causing the centre of gravity to fall over the legs. These may be implicated in low back pain. Pregnant mothers may also suffer with headaches, jaw pain, mid-back pain and pain in between the shoulder blades, foot, knee and leg pain. Whatever the joint or muscle symptom, a chiropractor may be able to help.

How Chiropractic treatment may be able to help:

Chiropractic care can be given for the first months of pregnancy till the last month of pregnancy. Treatment consists of a variety of techniques ranging from gently spinal adjusting through to trigger point therapy and gentle hold techniques. Spinal manipulation is safe during the first one and a half months of pregnancy, however with continued laxity, more gentle mobilization techniques are used,

Pregnant women do not have to suffer their whole pregnancy with back ache due to danger of anti-inflammatory drugs, chiropractic is a safe treatment option during pregnancy.

Some more information on chiropractic treatment of infant colic:

Research has shown that babies with colic respond very well to Chiropractic care. A recent study involving 316 infants diagnosed with colic, reported 94% successful resolution following a series of Chiropractic treatments.

Why does Chiropractic work when other methods fail?

During the birth process, a baby’s neck and back vertebrae are prone to moving out of alignment (Due to traumatic or normal birth). This affects the nerve above and below the vertebrae and is known technically as a “vertebral subluxation”. The body depends on the smooth flow of nerve communication from the brain through the spinal column to the rest of the body. Nerve supply is therefore vital to the functioning of all systems of the body including the stomach and intestines. A vertebral subluxation causes an interference in these communicating channels which affects the digestive function and results in discomfort, irritability and colic symptoms.

How can a Chiropractor help?

Chiropractic can help in detection and correction of the vertebral subluxation. This is done by carefully applying a gentle pressure with the fingers to the area of the spine where the vertebral subluxation is found. It is a very gently treatment where some babies totally relax or even fall asleep during this treatment. Muscle spasms may also need to be treated, as these may contribute to irritability of the baby.

How many treatments are necessary?

It may take a few treatments to correct the vertebral subluxation or muscular problem at hand. Chiropractic treatment helps to restore proper nerve supply from the brain to all the organs, including the digestive tract. With uninterrupted nerve flow, smooth impulses can flow from the brain through the spinal cord to all parts of the body. This results in a healthier, happier baby.

Some other pediatric signs that may signify a musculoskeletal problem:

 ·         Baby doesn’t want to lie or sleep in the supine position.

·         Baby preferring to turn the head to one side only. This may indicate a spasm of the   cervical spine (neck)

·         Infants who fail to suck effectively- This may be due to torticollis/ stiff neck; TMJ dysfunction, headache; sore neck and pain.
